Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *pěkrъ, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ḱ- (to fasten, place) (cognate with Latin pulcher (beautiful);[1][2] compare also Old Church Slavonic пѣгъ (pěgŭ)). Or cognate with Old High German fēh, Ancient Greek ποικίλος (poikílos, multicoloured) from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ-.[3]
