Etymology

From dialectal Proto-Slavic *polnъ, from a *polh₂no- derivative of Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (flat). Cognate to Upper Sorbian płony (flat; fruitless), Czech planý (wild; false; vain), Slovak planý (wild; false; vain), Slovene plȃn (without growth on it; flat); the original context being related to undesired plants.
