[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish پاپاغان (papağan), from Arabic بَبَغَاء (babaḡāʔ), a word of imitative origin. Compare English popinjay (archaic), Spanish papagayo, Italian pappagallo, Greek παπαγάλος (papagálos), etc. from the same Arabic root.
