Etymology

Probably from Latin petīgo ("scab, eruption"), a popular form of impetīgo (perhaps through a Vulgar Latin root *peticla < *(im)peticula, or alternatively, from a Vulgar Latin *pestic(u)la, from pestis. Less likely from Ancient Greek πιττάκια (pittákia), plural of πιττάκιον (pittákion).
