From Proto-Slavic *perunъ (thunderbolt), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *perkunos (the thunder god), from *perkʷ- (oak-tree). Also the name of the god of thunder in Slavic mythology. Cognate with Latvian pērkons.
