[edit]Deverbal from pograditi. First attested in the 19th century. The original meaning is hard to determine exactly, perhaps from 'what is built by wood, wooden structure' and then evolved into a bunkbed. Compare dialectal Slovak pohradky (“bunkbed”), dialectal Czech pohrada (“bunkbed”), archaic Polish pogródka (“wooden fence in a mill”).
