From prest +‎ -e- +‎ gjeld.

prestegjeld n (definite singular prestegjeldet, indefinite plural prestegjeld, definite plural prestegjelda or prestegjeldene)

  1. Formerly an administrative area in the Church of Norway (Den norske kirke), which were all phased out by 2012. They did form the basis for the kommuner (municipalities) created in the 19th century.
