Etymology[edit]

Cognate with Turkish kutan, Turkmen gotan (pelican) and Kazakh құтан (qūtan, heron). Compare also Mongolian хотон (xoton), Manchu ᡴᡡᡨᠠᠨ (kūtan) and Hungarian gödény (pelican), possibly a Turkic borrowing.
