Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Proposed etymologies include Latin refricāre, present active infinitive of refricō (compare Portuguese refegar, refregar), a Vulgar Latin *orificāre, from ōrificium, or a root *reficcāre, from ficcāre (compare Italian ficcare). Less likely of Slavic origin. [1] Cf. also Aromanian arufec, aruficari, with the same meaning.
