From Proto-Brythonic *ratinā (compare Cornish reden, Breton raden), diminutive of Proto-Celtic *ɸratis (compare Middle Irish raith, Old Irish raithnech), from Proto-Indo-European *perHt- (compare Greek φτέρη (ftéri), Lithuanian papártis).
