[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *reyk- (“to tear, scratch; streak”).[1] Cognate with Proto-Germanic *raih- (“row, streak, line”), Latin rixa (“quarrel, brawl”), and perhaps Sanskrit लिखति (likhati, “to scratch, scrape, pierce”).
