Via Arabic صِهْرِيج (ṣihrīj, cistern, tank) from Middle Persian *čāhrēg from [script needed] (cʾh /⁠čāh⁠/, pit, well) + [script needed] (lyk' /⁠rēg⁠/, sand), as are Spanish jaraíz, Galician and Portuguese chafariz (fountain).
