Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *satjaną, a causative of *sitjaną. Cognate with Old Saxon settian (Dutch zetten), Old High German sezzen (German setzen), Old Norse setja (Swedish sätta), Gothic 𐍃𐌰𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (satjan). Compare Old English sittan.
