From Proto-Albanian *stalkā, from Proto-Indo-European *stel- 'stalk, stem'. Cognate to Ancient Greek στέλος ‎(stélos, beam), Sanskrit स्थल ‎(sthála, elevation), Middle Low German stale ‎(post)[1] Also compare Old English stalu 'wooden upright' (English stalk), Danish stilk.
