[edit]From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-k-ywal (“jackal”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-k-jwal (“jackal”). Or from Bengali শিয়াল (śiẏal, “jackal”). Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-k-jwal (“jackal”) may be related to Sanskrit सृगाल (sṛgāla) (whence Bengali শিয়াল (śiẏal)). Cognate with Atong (India) sial (“jackal”).
