Etymology
[edit]Probably from Sanskrit शिङ्घाणिका (śiṅghāṇikā), ultimately derived from the root of siṅghati (“to sniff, to smell”), but Sanskrit exhibits many variations of form - ś/s/śr, gh/h/kh and -aka v. -ikā, and it is possible that folk etymology has affected this word.
