Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sьrxy (stem *sьršen-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śiršō, from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥h₂-s-ḗr ~ *kr̥h₂-s-n-ós, from the root *ḱerh₂s- (“head, top, horn”). Cognate with Lithuanian širšė, Latin crābrō, English hornet.
