Danish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Back-formation from skraldemand, meaning "garbage man". This in turn comes from skralde +‎ -mand, where skralde means "ratchet" or "rattle", as the garbage man would traditionally use a ratchet to signal his presence so people could deliver their trash.

Noun[edit]

skrald n (singular definite skraldet, not used in plural form)

  1. garbage, rubbish
  2. (by extension) something worthless
