[edit]From Old Norse sljór, sljár, slær, from Proto-Germanic *slaiwaz. Doublet of sløv, which is borrowed from Danish and of the same origin. Cognates include English slow.

Etymology 2
[edit]From Old Norse slœða. May be cognate with Icelandic slæða.
