[edit]A variant of dialectal smãgenys (“brain, marrow, gum”),[1] from Proto-Balto-Slavic *masgen (“brain, marrow”).[2] The Eastern Baltic forms seem to have experienced metathesis. Cognate with Old Prussian musgeno, Russian мозг (mozg), and Old Icelandic mergr (“marrow”).[3]
