Etymology

[edit]

From a family of Lithuanian words including smalsùs (curious) and smailùs (lustful, given to savoring tasty foods),[1] of unclear origin.[2] That said, note semantic similarities with Proto-Indo-European *(s)mey- (to smile, be glad).
