From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Galician-Portuguese sobrinno, sobrino (nephew), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin sōbrīnus (maternal cousin), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Italic *swezrīnos (of the sister), from *swezōr (sister).

Cognate with Galician sobriño, Asturian sobrín and Spanish sobrino.
