From Old High German spuoten, from Proto-Germanic *spōdijaną. Cognate with English speed. Indo-European cognates include Old Church Slavonic спѣти (spěti, to hasten, to succeed), Russian спеть (spetʹ, ripen), Sanskrit स्फायते (sphā́yatē, to grow fat, increase).
