From Old East Slavic спѣти (spěti), from Proto-Slavic *spěti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *spḗˀtei from Proto-Indo-European *speh₁-, whence English spare. Akin to Slovene speti, Slovak dospieť, Czech spět. Non-Slavic cognates include Ossetian ӕфсад (æfsad) and Latin spes.
