From Old Czech sršen, from Proto-Slavic *sьrxy (stem *sьršen-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śiršō, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂s-. Cognate with Lithuanian širšė, Latin crābrō, English hornet.
