Etymology

[edit]

Probably a calque of Russian правосла́вный (pravoslávnyj), from Old Church Slavonic православьнъ (pravoslavĭnŭ), itself a calque of Ancient Greek ὀρθόδοξος (orthódoxos). The first component appears to be stačias (upright), however the second component corresponding to "fame" or "glory" is uncertain.
