Borrowed from Old Occitan or Occitan estampida, from estampier, from Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌼𐍀𐌾𐌰𐌽 (stampjan), from Proto-Germanic *stampōną, from Proto-Indo-European *stembʰ- (to trample down).
