Older stif-, from Old Danish stiup-, styp-, stib-, from Old Norse stjúp-, from Proto-Germanic *steupa- (bereft, step-), cognate with Swedish styv-, English step-, German stief-. In modern Danish influenced by the noun sted (place, stead) (virtually = "instead").
