Etymology

From Byzantine Greek στέριφος (stériphos), borrowed from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 229: Parameter 1 should be a valid language code; the value "VL." is not valid. See WT:LOL. *exstirpus, or directly from Vulgar Latin. Compare Aromanian sterpu, Albanian shterp, Sicilian strippa, Venetian sterpo, Friulian sterpe.
