Etymology

Possibly ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Byzantine Greek στέριφος (stérifos). Alternatively, it may be derived from a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin root *exstirpus or *extirpus. Compare Romanian sterp. Compare Albanian shterp, shterpë, probably from the same source, and Venetian sterpa, Friulian sterpe.
