- Secologanin, the monoterpenoid precursor of stictosidine, was believed to be derived from geranyl diphosphate that is biosynthesized from mevalonate and/or non-mevalonate pathways, through a series of hydroxylation, epoxidation, oxidation, glycosylation, methylation, and cyclization steps [ 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 ] ( Fig 1 ).
