From Proto-Germanic *strēlaz, *strēlō (arrow, ray, beam), from Proto-Indo-European *strēl- *strēlā- (arrow, beam). Cognate with Old Saxon strāla, Middle Dutch strael (Dutch straal), Old High German strāla (German Strahl). The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Proto-Slavic *strěla (Russian стрела́ (strelá)).
