From Proto-Germanic *strēlaz, *strēlō (“arrow, ray, beam”), from Proto-Indo-European *strēl- *strēlā- (“arrow, beam”). Cognate with Old Saxon strāla, Middle Dutch strael (Dutch straal), Old High German strāla (German Strahl). The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Proto-Slavic *strěla (Russian стрела́ (strelá)).
