Inherited from Old Polish sieczeń from Proto-Slavic *sěčьnь (January, winter month of cutting wood), derived from Proto-Slavic *sěča (cutting wood) from Proto-Slavic *sěťi (to cut), with -ty- possibly by influence from the word tyka (pole, rod, branch, beam).
