sukkula
Appearance

[edit]
Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. One possibility considered is a loan from Old East Slavic *съкальꙗ (*sŭkalĭja) (compare Russian скалья́ (skalʹjá)). Another is relation to sukkela (“quick, swift”) (as the shuttle is sent back and forth during weaving; compare the synonym syöstävä from syöstä). Related to Ingrian sukkulain, Karelian sukkula, sukkulaine, Ludian sukkulainʹe and Veps sukloine.
