Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Slovak svatba, from Proto-Slavic *svatьba. Compare Old Church Slavonic сватьба (svatĭba), which is normally derived from Proto-Slavic *svatiti sę (a verb in meaning of "to become a relative"). Compare Slovak svatať (a dialectal verb for "someone to woo into marriage, to get engaged, betroth") from Proto-Slavic *svatъ (meaning relative; svat). This interpretation was originally understood as process of courtings, arranged marriages or anything similar.

Alternatively, inherited from Proto-Slavic *svatьba but tied to Proto-Slavic *sytiti sę (a verb in meaning of "to satiate with food"; sýtiť sa), from Proto-Slavic *sytъ; sýty.
