With loss of intervocalic -v- (as in bly, gee) from Hollandic Dutch zwavel (swallow), itself with metathesis from dialectal zwalf (standard zwaluw), from Middle Dutch swalwe, from Old Dutch *swalwa, from Proto-Germanic *swalwǭ.
