[edit]Possibly derived from Middle Low German terlinc (“die, cube”), from tēre (“package”) + -linc (diminutive suffix), due to the cubic shape of things packaged for transport. Compare German Low German terling, Swedish tärning, Danish and Norwegian terning, Icelandic teningur and Faroese terningur.
