Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse þreskǫldr, þreskjǫldr, þrepskjǫldr, maybe from Proto-Germanic *þreskwaldu, *þreskwadlu, *þreskudla. Possibly related to tærske (to thrash, thresh) in a dated sense "to stamp, stomp, stump". Compare Norwegian terskel, treskel and Swedish tröskel.
