Cognate to Ingrian talla (inner sole of a boot), Finnish talla (sole of a plough or sledge), and Livonian tōla (foot). Most likely derived from tallama (to trample). The root has likely mixed with a Scandinavian loan; compare Swedish stall and Old Norse stallr.
