Etymology[edit]

From the pronunciation by the fictional character Tam Sventon, who had a lisp. Coined by author Åke Holmberg in 1948.

    • 1948, Åke Holmberg, “Ture Sventon köper en flygande matta [Tam Sventon buys a flying carpet]”, in Ture Sventon, privatdetektiv:
      "Får jag kanske lov att bjuda på en temla?" frågade Sventon. Mannen från Orienten visste inte vad en temla var.
      "Might I offer you a temla?" asked Sventon. The man from the Orient did not know what a temla was.
