Etymology

Cognate to Lithuanian šálti (to freeze), Sanskrit शिशिर (śíśira, cold, cool), Old Norse háll (slippery). Alternatively, a derivative of thellë, with an intermediate meaning of “darkness; storm” to “harsh cold”.
