Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Initial *d > ts requires following back vowel or syllabic, thus implying Proto-Indo-European *dn̥k/ḱ-, *dunk/ḱ- (see *denḱ-); although it should be noted that a semantic shift from "bite" > "stand up" is unprecedented and highly unlikely.
