From Proto-Southern Nuristani *unáwə, possibly from earlier *unáwřə, from Proto-Nuristani *unnáprata (wide field), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *udnás (water) + *prátʰas (width), literally "wide sea, wide water". Cognate with Waigali ünev.
