Swedish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]ut (“out”) + lova (“promise”)
Verb
[edit]utlova (present utlovar, preterite utlovade, supine utlovat, imperative utlova)
- to promise (something, or to bring about something)
- De utlovade allmänna val
- They promised to hold general elections
Usage notes
[edit]- Can take a thing someone promises (to bring about) as a direct object.
- For "I promise to ...", "Jag lovar att ..." sounds more natural than "Jag utlovar att ..."
- Idiomatic for "a promised X" (an X someone has been promised) in the past participle utlovad.
