Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *vaippa, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *waipaz (compare Old Norse veipa, veipr (headscarf, kerchief) and Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍀𐍃 (waips, crown, wreath)). Cognate with Votic vaippa (carpet) and Finnish vaippa (diaper; mantle, cloak, robe).
