Etymology

Uncertain. Cf. Slavic vinicije ("vineyard"). See also an alternative and rarer folk name for the month, vinimeriu, which some linguists have derived from Latin vindemiārius, from vīndēmia[1]. Compare the Friulian folk name for September, mês de vendeme, and southern Italian innegna, also from vīndēmia.
