Per Brückner, a native[1] word, derived from Proto-Indo-European *wérsēn (virile man, male animal). Akin to Latin verrēs (boar), Latvian vērsis (ox), Lithuanian ver̃šis (calf, ox), Old Prussian werstian (calf), Sanskrit वृषन् (vṛ́ṣan, male, bull, stallion).
