Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from German Ferkel + -ę.
Per Brückner, a native[1] word, derived from Proto-Indo-European *wérsēn (“virile man, male animal”). Akin to Latin verrēs (“boar”), Latvian vērsis (“ox”), Lithuanian ver̃šis (“calf, ox”), Old Prussian werstian (“calf”), Sanskrit वृषन् (vṛ́ṣan, “male, bull, stallion”).
