- ^ Boutin 2012: Powwow and wacipi are not necessarily synonymous, as historian Loren Dean Boutin notes: "'Powwow' and 'wacipi' are sometimes used almost synonymously [among Dakota], but 'powwow' is the word with the broadest meaning. A powwow can and usually does have a wacipi within it". (p. 21)
