From Proto-Germanic *wlitiz, *wlituz (appearance, look, aspect), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (to see). Cognate with Old Frisian wlite, Old Saxon wliti, Old Norse litr, Gothic 𐍅𐌻𐌹𐍄𐍃 (wlits). Related to Old English wlītan (to see, look), wlātian (to gaze, observe).
