From Old English ġilte, *ġielte, from Proto-West Germanic *galtijā, from *galtō +‎ *-jā, from Proto-Germanic *galtô (whence Old Norse gylta, gyltr (young sow)), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel- (to cut).[1]
